Bulk Pau D'Arco (dried, cut and sifted, 3 ounces)
Botanical Name: Tabebuia heptaphylla
Family: Bignoniaceae
---Synonyms--- Taheebo
Folk History and Use
Pau d'arco is as new to Western herbalists as capsicum was to Europeans in the early 1500's. Today, much confusion exists about its identification and use not only among herbalists, but also among taxonomists as well. There are dozens of different species of pau 'arco. They can be identified by their leaf configuration and flower color including pink, red, yellow and violet-flowered species. The trees with red, violet, and pink flowers are preferred for medicinals, while the yellow-flowered species are considered to be an inferior product The best pau d'arco is reported to be the violet-flowered Tabebuia heptaphylla, which grows mainly in Argentina. Argentina is also a large supplier of the violet- flowered species, while Brazil is the largest supplier of the yellow and red-flowered species.
The herb is harvested by peeling the bark from the tree in vertical strips from the ground up to the height of man. Only inner bark is used for medicinal purposes and this must be painstakingly separated from the outer bank.
The Incas and native tribes of South America use pau d'arco bark externally as a poultice or decoction for treating skin diseases including eczema, psoriasis, fungal infections, hemorrhoids ans skin cancers.
A tea made from the bark is used as a blood purifier, to treat ulcers and rheumatism ans is said to cure leukemia. It is also diuretic and antipyretic.
The recent popularity of pau d'arco in Western herbology is attributed to its antifungal activity in treating systemic yeast infections like candida albicans.
Medicinal Properties
Definite Action
Astringent (tannins)
Antifungal (tannins)
Possible Action
Antitumor activity (lapachol)
Pau D'arco has been extensively studied for its potential use as an anti tumor agent. The studies, including those sponsored by the American Cancer Society at the National Institute of Health, have shown the purified individual napthaquinones to have little antitumor activity in vitro. These initial findings have essentially closed the book on conventional anticancer research with this herb.
However, the folk remedies for pau d'arco used a crude, boiling water extract (tea) that included all the 16 known naphthaquinones and other, as yet unknown factors, to produce the antitumor effect. No one has yet proven or disproven the antitumour effects of pau d'arco as used by the South American Indians.
