Folk History and Use
Mullein has a folk history of use that focuses on respiratory ailments.It has traditionally been used to treat coughs, colds, croup, bronchitis and asthma. Because of its soothing nature, it has also been used to treat hemorrhoids, ulcers and inflammatory skin disorders. The flowers and seeds contain as essential oil used to treat earaches. Mullein is considered the herb of choice for lung ailments.

Mullein is a mucilaginous herb that has many properties similar to marshmallow root. Its mucilage content is probably responsible for most of its medicinal properties. The saponins and tannins contribute to its soothing effect but little is known about it scientifically.
Typical Daily Usage
Fresh leaf: 1-2 tablespoons
Dried leaf: 2-3 gm
Extract: 2 gm in a cup of boiling water
