Medical Properties
Definite Action
Diuretic (volatile oil)
Antiseptic (volatile oil)
Juniper is a blood purifier in the sense that its volatile oil helps the body eliminate impurities from the blood through the urinary tract. The diuresis is accomplished by irritating the filtering tissues of the kidney's and causing them to increase the quantity of fluid they release. One note on cleansing the blood in this manner: all serum constituents are discharged bu this process. Essential nutrients as well as toxins are lost. The essential nutrients must be replaced if an individual's homeostasis is to be maintained.
Juniper berry is an excellent antiseptic that works best on contact. Its disinfectant action is similar to that of pine cleaners. Topically, juniper oil can be applies to cuts and scrapes, just like tree oil. Ingesting the berries or its oil will help to overcome bacterial and yeast infections. Its extract can be uses as a gargle.
Its use in treating benign prostatic hypertrophy requires increasing large amounts of the berry and some allergic reactions have been reported. This application is only a superficial treatment since these types of infections are only outgrowths of the primary inflammation in the prostate.
The irritating nature of the oil makes it potentially dangerous to those with impaired kidney function since inflammation often accompanies irritation.
