Hydrangea contains bitter principles that qualify it as a blood purifier. These compounds increase the production of urine and provide a laxative effect. This herb enhances the elimination process especially in the urinary system
Its use in eliminating kidney stones has not been proven scientifically, but the root has a long list of testimonials form those who have employed it. It is quite a harsh herb and not generally used on a daily basis. It is one of the minority herbs used in acute situations such as when kidney stone begins to move down the urinary tract.
Hydrangea contains several flavonoids including quercetin and rutin. These compounds are said to inhibit tumor formation and reduce inflammation and have a diuretic effect. They are likely responsible for much of its action. In addition, the root contains other bitter principles including hygangein whose action has not yet been determined.
