Bulk Hydrangea Root (dried, cut and sifted, 3 ounces)

Botanical Name: Hydrangea arborescens

Family: Saxifragaceae

---Synonyms--- wild hydrangea, seven barks, gravel root, stone root

---Part Used-- root

Folk History and Use

The root is often called gravel root and stone root. It is most noted in folk medicine for its ability to help one eliminate kidney stones. The Cherokee Indians introduced it to the European settlers for this purpose. They called it stone root not only because it was said to remove stones but also because the root is hard like a stone.

Herbalists also use the root to break up all lumps and tumors. Its use has spread to include imbalances of the urinary system including kidney stone, bladderstone, incontinence, dysuria and benign prostatic hypertrophy.

Medicinal Properties

Probable action

Diuretic (flavonoids)

Laxative (?)

Possible Action

Antitumor (?)

Anti renal calculus (?)

Hydrangea contains bitter principles that qualify it as a blood purifier. These compounds increase the production of urine and provide a laxative effect. This herb enhances the elimination process especially in the urinary system

Its use in eliminating kidney stones has not been proven scientifically, but the root has a long list of testimonials form those who have employed it. It is quite a harsh herb and not generally used on a daily basis. It is one of the minority herbs used in acute situations such as when kidney stone begins to move down the urinary tract.

Hydrangea contains several flavonoids including quercetin and rutin. These compounds are said to inhibit tumor formation and reduce inflammation and have a diuretic effect. They are likely responsible for much of its action. In addition, the root contains other bitter principles including hygangein whose action has not yet been determined.
