Folk History and Use

Few scientific studies have been performed on eyebright to determine its activity, yet it remains in high esteem among Western herbalists for its use as an eyewash. Recently, the internal consumption of the herb has been popularized by the notion that eyebright has a stimulant, cleansing effect on the liver releases stores of Vitamin A in the blood, which in turn finds its way to the eye. It is highly unlikely the eye could be strengthen in this manner. Its function as an eyewash is due to its antimicrobial, volatile oil content and astringent tannins.

Eyebright is a blood purifier that enhances liver function.Chinese philosophy gives every part of the universe and opposite. The liver is the internal organ that matched the eye as an external organ of the body. Therefor, any herb that strengthens the liver must also strengthen the eye,

Eyebright is similar, but much weaker in action, to golden seal when it comes to its use as an eyewash. It contains astringent and antibiotic principles that are useful for cleansing the eye. Systemic effects such as stimulation of the liver to release Vitamin A are unfounded scientifically.

Typical Daily Usage

Fresh Herb: 1/4-1/2 cup

Dried Root: 6-12 gm

Extract: 9 gm dried herb, 45 ml alcohol, 45 ml water
