Description* :
Damiana Leaf (dried, cut and sifted, 3 ounces)
Botanical Name: Turnera diffusa
Family: Turneraceae
Folk History and Use
Aztec legend state that damiana was a powerful aphrodisiac. This single evidence, it appears had led to its use in liquor, and in most herbal energy and longevity formulas.
More likely, damiana is a blood purifier with many of the same properties as parsley. Its essential oil is irritating to mucous membranes and may account for it success as a diuretic, laxative, blood purifier and expectorant. There is little evidence that sexual performance is enhanced with the use of damiana.
Damiana has traditionally been used to treat coughs, colds, enuresis, nephritis, headaches and dysmenorrhea.
Medicinal Properties
Definite Action
Expectorant (volatile oil)
Laxative (volatile oil)
Diuretic (volatile oil)
Possible Action
Aphrodisiac (?)
Damiana has been widely reported to be an aphrodisiac. This claim has not been supported by scientific study. It is more aptly described as blood purifier. It contains an aromatic oil consisting primarily of terpenes. These are the same chemical class of compounds as those found in juniper and parsley. These oils irritate mucous membranes and increase the production while decreasing the thickness of fluid produced. In the case of damiana, the effect is most pronounced in the reproductive and urinary systems.
