Folk History and Use

The plant and its extract are available commercially in pet and health food stores. The essential oil of catnip produces the catnip response that stimulates most cats in unique ways that range from merely being frisky to euphoria and sexual stimulation. Its effects in humans appear to be just the opposite as in cats. It possesses an essential oil that contains sesquiterpene lactones that are chemically similar to those found in valerian root. Catnip is a sedative in humans and has traditionally been used to treat insomnia, indigestion, nervousness, amenorrhea, flatulence, coughs, colds and fever.

Catnip is an aromatic herb whose essential oil contains about 1% nepetalactone and related compounds. Nepetalactone is closely related in chemical structure to the valepotriates found in valerian root. Most scientific studies on catnip have been performed on cats. There does not appear to be a direct correlation in humans. Indeed the effects seem to be nearly opposite in nature.

Catnip extracts, especially when used in conjunction with fennel oil, provides a safe effective means for eliminating the effects of colic in young children. Cat nip is one of the most popular herbs in stress formula where it is included for its sedative effect. Perhaps the most popular use of catnip is as an herbal tea consumed just before bedtime. It has a long list of folk uses which is understandable since it is often difficult to get a good night's sleep in today's fast paced world.

Typical Daily Usage

Fresh herb: 1-3 teapsoon

Dried herb: 0.5-1 gm

Extract: 1 gm dried herb in a cup of boiling water
