Blue Cohosh Root (dried, cut and sifted, 3 ounces)

Botanical Name: Caulophyllum thalictroides

Family: Berberidaceae

---Synonyms--- pappoose root, squawroot, blue ginseng, yellow ginseng

---Part Used--- root

Folk History and Use

Blue cohosh has been compared to goldenseal in its effects. Indeed, some have used it as an effective control for chronic yeast infections. Today its use is mostly limited to regulating the menstrual cycles of women and combating painful menstruation.

Most of its folk history comes from its use by Native Americans. It deveolped quite a reputation for reducing the pain and spasms of menstruation and to stimulate menstrual flow. Most importantly, it was used to induce labor. Indeed pregnant women should avoid the use of blue cohosh.

The bitter principles in blue cohosh constrict peripheral blood vessels in a manner similar to nicotine. The also cause uterine contractions and are antifungal.

Blue cohosh has traditionally been used to treat spasmodic dysmenorrhea, amenorrhea, premenstrual syndrome, candidiasis, vaginitis, fiberous cystic disease, constipation and as a vermifuge.

Medical Properties

Definite action

Increases blood pressure (alkaloids)

Peripheral vasoconstrictor (alkaloids)

Uterine Stimulant (saponins)

Laxative (bitter principles)

Antifungal (bitter principles)

Antimicrobial (bitter principles)

Blue cohosh is a relatively complicated herb to use. It appears that the dose required for balancing the menstrual cycles changes throughout the cycle. If too much is taken intestinal cramping and headaches often occur. This probably explains why its use now restricted nearly completely to inducing labor during childbrith.

Typical Daily Usage:

Fresh Root: 1/2-1 teaspoon
