Black Cohosh Root (dried, cut and sifted 3 ounces)
Botanical Name: Cimifuga racemosa
Family: Ranunculaceae
---Synonyms--- bugbane, rattleroot, squawvine, snakeroot, black snake root
---Part Used--- Root
Folk History and Use:
Early American settlers found that black cohosh was widely used by American Indian tribes. They made a poultice of bruised root and applied it to poisonous snake bites. The Winnebagos, Penobscots and Dakotas, in particular, used it internally as well as externally for snake bites. They also used a decoction of root to treat coughs, chest difficulties, diarrhea and irregular menstruation.
The botanical name of black cohosh is derived from the Latin "cimex" meaning bedbug and "fugere" meaning to drive or fly away, in reference to its repellent action on bedbugs. The species name is from the Latin "racemosus" meaning full of flowers.
Historically, other uses have included treatment for scarlet fever, measles, smallpox, asthma, scrofula, St. Vitus' dance, bronchitis, intercostal myalgia, sciatica, whooping cough, tinnitus, pericarditis, angina pectoris, gonorrhea in men, spermatorrhea, seminal emission, sexual weakness, dyspepsia, hysteria, menopause and general difficulties involving the female reproductive system.
The herb is taken in small doses as it contains salicylic acid, a gastric irritant. Overdoses are easily identified by nausea and headache.
Black Cohosh has been used externally to heal sores and puncture wounds. The most common internal uses have been in the treatment of rheumatism and pulmonary conditions. It is best known as a remedy for ailments of the female reproductive system, including dysmenorrhea, amenorrhea and difficult pregnancy and childbirth.
