NATURAL CHOICES FOR ALLERGY SYMPTOMS BACKED BY SCIENCE
An astounding 40 million Americans suffer from allergies. sneezing, a stuffy, runny nose and itchy eyes and throat often bring to mind seasonal hay fever during Spring and Fall. But for many people the symptoms of allergies are a year round struggle due to dust mites, pet dander and mold spores. The AAAAI, American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology, estimated that 16.7 million office visits a year are attributed to allergic rhinitis (better known as allergies). They also estimated that overall costs of allergic rhinitis in the United States in 1996 totaled $6 billion. Choices for allergy sufferers consist of prescription drugs, Over- The-Counter (OTC) drugs and natural supplements. Doctors are often hesitant to prescribe Prescription and OTC drugs because of the array of side effects that are associated with them. Many natural supplements contain the herb ephedra, which is controversial in its side effects. Ephedra-based products are not the only natural alternatives available. New and promising scientific research, on a wide array of natural remedies, provides safe and effective choices for allergy sufferers.
AYURVEDIC MEDICINE Ayurvedic Medicine consists of an enormous selection of herbs, many of which are uncommon in the U.S. The following Ayurvedic herbs have been used for centuries in Indian traditional medicine to treat allergies. more recently many of them have been the subject of scientific study, validating their beneficial role in alternative medicine. The following chart summarizes the traditional uses of these herbs and their more recent scientific evidence.
| Phyllanthus emblica | Cough, asthma, bronchitis | Expectorant activity |
| Terminalia chebula | Cought, asthma, expectorant | Antihistamine, bronchial asthma and chronic sinusitis |
| Terminalia bellercia | Cough, asthma | Antitussive (cough), antiasthmatic |
| Albizia lebbeck | Asthma, antihistamine, allergies, bronchitis | Asthma, antitussive, prevent allergic-induced bronchospasm, mast cell degranulation, antihistamine |
| Zingiber officinale | Chronic bronchitis, common cold, chest congestion, cough | Antihistamine |
| Piper longum | Cough,bronchitis, asthma, cold | Anti-allergic, lung health, asthma |
| Piper nigrum | Asthma, cough | Anti-allergic |
MSM is a naturally occurring sulfur compound found in all plants and animals. It has been the subject of a recent multi-centered study for seasonal allergies. The study, using OptiMSM , included 42 people with allergic responses to grass pollen, weed pollen, fungi, trees and shrubs. the study was conducted in May and June to ensure high levels of air- borne allergens. Each participant took 2600 mg of MSM for 30 days and was evaluated every 7 days. By Day 7, total upper respiratory symptoms were significantly reduced, which continued through Day 30. Lower respiratory symptoms improved by Day 21 and continued to improve by Day 30. Energy levels significantly increased by Day 14 and continued to improvement by Day 30. The scientists concluded that 2600 mg of MSM per day may be efficacious in reducing the effects of seasonal allergies.
STINGING NETTLES Nettles have been used by European herbalists for centuries for allergic reactions and lung disorders. Repeatedly, consumers have been finding nettles to be an effective tool in reducing the effects of allergies. A double- blind placebo-controlled study found nettles to rate higher than placebo in response to allergy symptoms. Although these findings are preliminary, it does give scientific support to its historical use in treating allergies.
QUERCETIN More recently, quercetin has also been a reliable natural alternative for allergy sufferers. In vitro studies have shown quercetin to prevent the release of histamine and other chemicals our body uses to create the symptoms of allergies. One in vitro study using human cells found quercetin to inhibit the release of histamine. This helps us understand why consumers found great results with quercetin, because without the release of these chemicals, allergic reactions like stuffy nose, itchy eyes and throat would be greatly reduced.
OTHER ALTERNATIVES One of the major symptoms of allergies is inflammation in sinuses and the lungs. There are many natural products, which seem to have effects on reducing inflammation and could be helpful for allergy sufferers. digestive enzymes, particularly protease enzymes like Bromelain, are well known for their use in reducing inflammation from arthritis and injury. culinary spices such as ginger and turmeric have historical references to many inflammatory conditions. The herb Feverfew, which is traditionally used for migraines, seems to have anti-inflammatory properties of the sinuses as well. Antioxidants are also important in supporting the immune system, which triggers allergic response. Antioxidants help reduce free radical damage, which causes fatigue, confusion and general malaise, all symptoms associated with allergies. Antioxidants come in many forms such as, flavonoids found in berries and grape seeds and vitamins A, C and E. The sinus and lungs are dense vascular areas. Antioxidants and flavonoids also support the health and elasticity of blood vessels. The future holds great promise for natural remedies as scientific validation confirms their historical uses and provides new, safer solutions to seasonal and year-round allergies.
