Ginseng's Roots
Ginseng - meaning "the essence of earth in the form of a man" in Chinese-probably received its name from the shape of its long fleshy root, the part of the plant containing most of the beneficial properties associated with it.
For over five thousand years the Chinese believed ginseng to have powerful properties that revitalize and restore balance in the body systems. They include it in their herbal formulas as a cure for cancer, rheumatism, diabetes, sexual debility and aging - to restore health as well as prolong life. Europeans first heard about the beneficial properties of ginseng in the mid-1600's, from explorers returning from Asia.
Ginseng also grows naturally in North America. Native Americans have long valued the plant's curative properties and its ability to prolong life, and they imbued it with mystical powers. Europeans identified the North American variety in the early 1700's, and when it was recognized to be superior to the Oriental species, Asian demand for the American ginseng almost brought about its extinction.
Cultivation of the American ginseng began in the late 1800's, and today 95% of the U.S. crop (almost 4 million pounds) is exported to Asia annually.
Reality of the Myth
In the past ginseng was regarded as a panacea for many illnesses and a tonic for general health. The myth has withstood the test of time. Ginseng is now regarded as an adaptogen, meaning it has the ability to help bring body back to a "normal" condition regardless of the state of health or disease. An adaptogen helps to raise the body's tolerance to physical and psychological stress so that the body systems can maintain a balance. Ginseng's ability to regulate stress and improve endurance are examples of its adaptogenic properties.
Ginseng root contains at least 29 active ingredients, or ginsenosides. Of these, the Rb and Rg ginsenosides are perhaps the most significant. Rb-1 has a calming effect of the body(Yin qualities), helping it manage stress, while Rg-1 has a stimulating effect (Yang qualities), giving the body energy. Not surprisingly, the Chinese recognized these soothing yet revitalizing properties of ginseng which parallel the balance integral in the Chinese philosophy of Yin and Yang.
Modern research has identified the following properties in ginseng's ginsendosides:
The Superior Ginseng
All true ginseng's have "Panax" (the Greek work for panacea or cure all) as part of their scientific name. Panax ginseng from Asia and Panax quinquefolius from North America are the two primary forms of true ginseng.
American ginseng root is more potent than the Asian variety because it has a higher concentration of ginsenosides, especially Rb-1 and Rg-1. The ratio of Rb-1 to Rg-1 is 5:1 in American ginseng and only 2:1 in Asian ginseng. This is the reason American ginseng has been found to be more effective than Asian ginseng in stress management, recovery and controlling high blood pressure. It is more protecting of the adrenam glands and can be taken over a long period of time without causing overuse reactions. Asian ginseng, on the other hand, is more appropriate for short term stimulation.
